Laura Dolfin, RD, CD, Registered Dietitian, St. Nicholas Hospital, Sheboygan

UW-Sheboygan 2004 Graduate, Associate of Arts and Sciences

Mount Mary College 2007 Graduate, Bachelor of Science -- Dietetics

"I had been out of high school for 16 years and had been a stay-at-home mom for the last six years... Because I had chosen to forgo a four-year college after high school to join the workforce and get married, I had always had some nagging questions in the back of my mind. Namely, if I had gone to college, what would it have been for, could I have handled it and how might my life be different? ... With the support and encouragement of my husband, I summoned up the courage to take the first step and check into what UW-S had to offer me. I found that I would be able to take about 60 of the required 128 credits I need to become a Registered Dietitian right here in Sheboygan. So I dove in headfirst into the world of classes, homework and tests. My two years at UW-Sheboygan were by far the best! The professors were intelligent, supportive and challenging. They knew my name and were always available to offer advice and help with difficult problems. When I transferred to Mount Mary, there was no doubt in my mind that I would be able to succeed there... If you have the desire to further your education or have some of those same nagging questions, why not take that first step? Call UW-Sheboygan to find out what they have to offer. I guarantee you will not be disappointed!"

Lyndzi Miller, UW-Sheboygan 2007 Graduate of the Year

"UW-Sheboygan was the best start for me because I could work one on one with my professors, something which I rarely could ever do at another university. By the time I graduated, not only did most of the professors and staff know me by name, but they also knew who I was. UW- Sheboygan's tuition was affordable, but the quality wasn't cheap. It was what we students call a gourmet education for a McDonald's price. The monetary element factors into the fact that unlike my peers that went straight to four-year schools like Madison and Milwaukee, I will not start my education off in debt -- and due to the quality of education I have received, I don't think my education will end in debt either. Because UW-S was such a small campus, it had its own community that was close-knit and easy to get into. I joined clubs and attended meetings with the same people I went to class with each day and developed rapports with more individuals than I would have in a larger campus where it seems students introvert themselves more often. I really enjoyed UW-S and I'm incredibly grateful I started my college years off there."

Kelly Lair, UW-S sophomore

"Attending UW-Sheboygan was probably the best choice I could have made when it came to my education – the small class sizes, one-on-one interaction with professors, low tuition costs, convenient class schedules and guaranteed transfer program all made UW-Sheboygan worth attending. I cannot believe how much I have learned here, not only academically, but about myself. When I transfer to a four year campus, I will be ready and prepared for the life ahead of me."

Jessica Donlon, 2005 UWS Graduate
"Attending UW Sheboygan is a great way to begin your successful college education. The small class sizes give the outstanding professors an opportunity to work one-on-one with each of the students. I am also impressed with the great facilities and with the thousands of dollars that I have saved."

Dana Atwood-Harvey, Ph.D., UWS Assistant professor of Sociology
Last year, Dana won the UW Sheboygan Teacher of the Year award. TwoDana and students overriding themes in the nominations offered by students were her enthusiasm and commitment to teaching: giving individual attention to help the students succeed and
presenting the class material in a way that was relevant to their lives. Here is just some of the high praise her students had for Dana:
“She challenges you to think outside ‘the box’ and gives you new perspectives on society.”
“Dana is inspiring. She gave me a thirst for knowledge. I am forever in debt to her.”

Pa Moua, UWS Student
"I decided to make UW Sheboygan my first choice because of its small class sizes, guaranteed transfer, and individual attention from the faculty and staff. It offers low tuition, a convenient class schedule, and leadership opportunities for freshmen. There are also many clubs and organizations. I am confident that UW Sheboygan will help me make a difference in my family and in this society in the years to come."

Andrew Smith, Recent UWS GraduateAndrew Smith
"I couldn’t have made a better choice than UW Sheboygan — not only because of the cost but also because of the value. I think it would be hard for other institutions to match UW Sheboygan for the educational experience provided by the rigorous courses and the helpful faculty and staff."

Karl J. Byrand, Ph.D., UWS Assistant professor of geography
In his fifth year at UWS, Karl focuses on his students’ needs and how he can best meet theKarl Byrand and Studentsm. Karl’s accomplishments in university teaching won him the attention of Pearson Education, the largest textbook company in the world. Pearson contracted him to write several extensive educational projects, including a mapping workbook to accompany the text World Regional
Geography: other professors are using the assignments he designed for his students at UW Sheboygan. Most recently, Karl authored a physical geography instructor’s manual that
professors across the nation use when working with a seminal textbook on physical geography.

Jeff Faucher, UW Sheboygan 1993-1995
UW-Milwaukee, Chemistry Major
Chemist, Compton Corporation, New York City

By spending my first two years at UWS, I was able to keep my same job and still live at home, allowing me to save money.  Also, the classes are taught by actual professors, something you don't find at bigger colleges, where most of the classes are taught by teaching assistants, and you often don't ever get a chance to talk with the professors.

Gayle A. Kiszely, UW Sheboygan 1997-1999
Marian College, 2001, B.S. History
Marquette University, Masters History, 2003
Heritage Research Ltd. and Marian College

I transferred all of my UW-Sheboygan credits to Marian College for my B.S. in History and then continued in history at Marquette University for my Masters. My professors at Sheboygan, in history as well as geography, literature and psychology, intellectually challenged me for the demands of graduate school and the business world. I currently am applying that education as a staff historian at Heritage Research, Ltd., a historical consulting firm, and as an adjunct instructor at Marian College.

Tom Uebelherr, UWS assistant professor of art
Tom earned UW Sheboygan’s Arthur M. KaplTom Uebelherr and studentan Award for 2003-04. He was selected for revitalizing the campus’s art program and exposing student artwork to the campus and community, placing high expectations on his students and having them respond well to the challenges, and heading up various campus projects, such as competitions for art scholarships, the annual sculpture invitational, and a guest lecturer series that allows students to meet with artists from the likes of New York City, Korea, and more. An accomplished artist himself, Tom puts in long hours to help his students reach their own goals, whether they are just trying to find how they can be more creative and have fun, or are committed to becoming accomplished artists themselves.

Elizabeth Torstveit, UW Sheboygan 1996-1998
UW-Stevens Point, 2000, B.S. Biological Sciences
Zookeeper, Hogle Zoo, Salt Lake City

My education at UWS helped me reach my goal to become a zookeeper. I chose UWS because I could live with my parents and save money. But I ended up with a lot more than a bargain. Professors and even staff members like the library director were there to guide me through and give me confidence. They helped me, but I worked hard and I’m proud of how well I did.
