High school art competition honors student artists with UW-S scholarships
A wide selection of artworks from local aspiring student artists from several area high schools are showcased in the 2008 University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan Art Department 7th annual High School Student Art Scholarship Competition.
Participating high school seniors submitted works in hopes of netting a scholarship to help defray tuition costs to attend UW-Sheboygan. The show will be on display in the UW-Sheboygan Fine Arts Gallery through June 9.
All area high school students were welcomed to participate and compete for one $500 scholarship and four $250 scholarships, provided by the UW-Sheboygan Foundation. Drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, mixed media, metalsmithing, illustration and graphic design artworks were accepted for the competition.
All winners will be announced at the show’s formal opening reception on Friday, May 16 in the UW-Sheboygan Fine Arts Gallery.
All artworks, including award winners’ pieces, will be on display through June 9. The Fine Arts Gallery is open Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and located inside the Fine Arts Building.

UW-Sheboygan Foundation first-ever Golf Outing fundraiser a success
Ries foursome takes Team Champion honors
Despite dark skies and gusty winds, more than 60 golfers turned out for the first-ever UW-Sheboygan Foundation Scholarship Fundraiser Golf Outing at the challenging Whistling Straits’ Irish Course on Wednesday, May 7.
Foursomes representing several area businesses, as well as individual golf enthusiasts, supported the event, which raised money to support annual scholarship awards to UW-Sheboygan students.
Top honors on the challenging 72-par course went to the team of Dr. Tom Ries, Dr. Ike Dyksterhouse, Dr. Mark Lang and Ben Cleveland, who submitted a Best Ball score of 71, or one under par. Second place honors went to the Wal-Mart SuperCenter Sheboygan South team of Steve Talbert, Dan Dever, Troy Pool and Brian Guerin.
The Longest Drive Competition on Hole #14 on the Irish Course went to Tina Schlichting, who joined the Robert W. Baird & Co. foursome for the event.
Following the outing, all participants gathered for a reception with a brat fry and awards ceremony provided by Old Wisconsin Sausage.
Hole Sponsors also made the event a huge success, donating more than $2,500 towards two new scholarships for UW-Sheboygan students to be awarded for the 2009-10 academic year. Sponsors will be listed as benefactors on plaques awarded to these students at their high school awards ceremonies in spring 2009. Hole Sponsors included:

Senior auditor “retires” from student newspaper after 10 years of service
When John Humbert first volunteered on the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan campus some 20 years ago, he never imagined such a simple decision could open up so many doors to learning.
In 1988, Humbert, a Sheboygan resident, first came to UW-Sheboygan as a volunteer usher for University Theatre productions. That soon led to helping out in the Bookstore and eventually as a staff member for the campus newspaper, The Voice in 1998.
For the next 10 years, Humbert served the newspaper in a variety of capacities – from doing manual “paste up” before digital publication evolved to proofing each issue and even serving as the paper’s Business Manager and selling advertising.
As a senior auditing student, Humbert enrolled in the course for the newspaper, Communication 104, and worked alongside fellow UW-Sheboygan students but received no credits toward a degree.
Auditors, including senior citizens like Humbert (those over age 60), are considered “special” students enrolled in courses on a non-graded, non-credit basis. Students enrolled only in audit courses during a semester pay a reduced tuition rate (30 percent of the normal per credit tuition fee), while auditors age 60 and older may enroll for no charge. Auditing a class is available on a space-available basis and auditors must receive an instructor’s permission before being admitted into a class.
For Humbert, his experiences at UW-Sheboygan as an auditing senior were worth more than any college credits.
“I thought COM 104 would be a good way to start because it met as a class only once a week,” Humbert said. “In the early years, we did not have as much technology and preparing an issue took a lot of cut and paste work, so many of us could be involved. Later, I took on the Business Manager role to be sure that billing for ads was done correctly and remove this duty from the advisor.”
Although he was not working toward a degree like his fellow newspaper staff members, Humbert threw himself into the work, enjoying every minute.
“I began to appreciate the amount of work that goes into publishing a periodical, the deadlines, the accuracy and the cooperation,” he added. “And I was able to get to know the other students on a personal level.”
Now after 10 years and 10 semesters of service, Humbert is “retiring” from his student work with The Voice in order to “scale back” on his retirement activities.
Humbert’s shoes will be just about impossible to fill, according to Sherri Byrand, Voice advisor.
“The student newspaper has benefitted greatly from John’s dependable and helpful nature, but even more so from his amiable nature and quiet patience,” Byrand said. “We are so grateful for him.”
Byrand said that she hoped that other Sheboygan-area seniors would consider following in Humbert’s footsteps and auditing UW-Sheboygan courses, such as The Voice.
“We hope his service is a beacon for more seniors in the Sheboygan area to find that this campus is an ideal place for them to share their skills and talents, and know that those talents and that knowledge will be deeply appreciated,” Byrand said.
While Humbert is stepping back from his on-campus activities a bit, he’s not willing to say “goodbye” to UW-Sheboygan completely. Humbert does plan to audit at least one course in the fall and plans to still be available on a volunteer basis to assist University Theatre or The Voice next year.
“I have enjoyed meeting the students and perhaps helping them adapt to college life,” Humbert said. “UW-Sheboygan has become an exciting, ever-expanding place. I like to keep in touch with the facility, buildings and the courses.”
For more information on auditing procedures, contact the UW-Sheboygan Student Services Office at (920) 459-6633 or e-mail uwshb@uwc.edu.

Local students receive honors, awards at UW-S Honors Convocation
The University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan bestowed awards and honors on more than 70 students during the college’s 2007-08 Honors Convocation ceremony on May 6. The ceremony, which featured scholarship winners and student recognition award winners, attracted many students, faculty, staff and guests to the UW-Sheboygan Fine Arts Theatre.
Besides student awards, guests also were treated to convocation speaker, UW-Sheboygan Professor Emeritus Robert Margrett, who congratulated the students on their academic achievements and offered motivation for their continued success. Margrett retired last May after teaching English on the UW-Sheboygan campus for 38 years.
Andera Vanderwalker was named the school’s Graduate of the Year for 2007-08 for her outstanding service to the campus through several student organizations and her academic achievements, while Jennifer Adams received Valedictorian honors. Other students received recognitions awards from campus departments for their academic performance.
A special recognition award also was presented to senior auditor, John Humbert, for his 10 years of service as an auditing student for COM 104, or the student newspaper, The Voice. For 10 semesters, Humbert has enrolled in the course and assisted the staff in producing the publication by taking files to the printer, selling advertising and proofing the paper. He is the only senior auditing student recognized this year.
Additional students honored this year with scholarships and awards include those provided by the UW-Sheboygan Foundation and numerous local businesses and organizations, as well as local residents.

New Astronautics course to be offered at UW-Sheboygan next year
As a result of a recently approved NASA grant through the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium, the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan will adding a new “Astronautics” science course to its offerings beginning in 2009.
“Space – The Final Frontier,” also known as Special Topics in Physics (PHY 291), will be offered on the campus in spring 2009. This new aerospace science-related course will be team-taught by Dr. Dennis Crossley, Senior Lecturer of Physics, and Harald Schenk, Astronomy Lecturer. The course is the first of its kind throughout all of the UW Colleges – with UW-Sheboygan being the only of the 13 campuses across the state to offer such a course.
The course will serve as a general introduction to the topics of both Space Science and Astronautics and will transfer to a UW System four-year institution as a Physics/Astronomy elective.
This first course offering in this area of study will coincide with the planned future opening of the Great Lakes Aerospace Center (Spaceport Sheboygan) at the former Sheboygan Armory.
“The new course that Harald and I have developed is intended to share this vision with anyone interested in learning the basics of space travel and space exploration. It will give students the opportunity to explore in greater depth the many things they will see and learn at the new Great Lakes Aerospace Science and Education Center,” Crossley said. “It is a general interest course, but it will be interesting to see how many students are interested in exploring a career in the field of astronautics. It would be exciting to see the academic program in astronautics continue to expand at UW Sheboygan.”
The grant and the new class are made possible through UW-Sheboygan’s membership in the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium (WSGC). UW-Sheboygan was elected as a new member of the Consortium in late 2007. Membership in the WSGC allows UW-Sheboygan students and faculty access to scholarship, internship and grant opportunities provided by NASA. The new course grant marks the first awarded to the campus since joining the Consortium last year.
The Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium (WSGC) is a result of the Space Act of 1988, which was designed to prepare future generations of scientists, engineers and technicians for NASA. The WSGC is dedicated to helping provide Wisconsin students, researchers, businesses, non-profit organizations and other stakeholders with the tools, connections and resources they need to make the aerospace market in Wisconsin grow and thrive.
“Space — The Final Frontier” is just one of many new opportunities that will be made available to UW-Sheboygan students through the WSGC. For example, UW-Sheboygan students are encouraged to participate in high-powered rocketry study through the WSGC. Any interested UW-S student can apply for membership on a team. Scholarships and a variety of other NASA internships are also available to students through the program.
“In developing this exciting new course, Dr. Crossley and Mr. Schenk have demonstrated the academic strength of those who teach for the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan,” said Al Hardersen, UW-Sheboygan Dean and Campus Executive Officer. “This area is fortunate to have organizations and individuals who are interested in learning about space. The Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium recognized that when they designated our campus for membership earlier this year. The faculty and staff applaud Dennis and Harald.”
While the actual dates and times for the new course are still being determined for the spring 2009 semester, it is hoped that the course will have its own high-altitude balloon component. Students enrolling in the course will be involved in launching instruments to an altitude of about 20 miles, collecting information on the near-space environment, and then chasing the descending payload to a safe recovery.
“Watching the experiment made with your very hands launched by a high-altitude balloon and receiving your data in real time as it ascends into near space -- this is a thrill that undergraduates at UW-Sheboygan will get to experience,” Schenk added. “The launch, though, is only a part of the excitement. Students will be engaged in the full learning cycle of theory, research, instrumentation, launch, operations, data analysis and possible publication. The high altitude/near space launch makes each of these steps both exciting and practical.”
Schenk will attend a seminar on proper balloon launching procedures in May at Taylor University in Indiana in an effort to prepare for the course. The staff from Taylor University will then visit UW-Sheboygan during in spring 2009 to complete a test launch in the local area.
For more information about this course or any UW-Sheboygan degree program, contact the Student Services Office at (920) 459-6633 or e-mail uwshb@uwc.edu.

UW-Sheboygan art professor receives UW System teaching award
The University of Wisconsin System has selected UW-Sheboygan Art Professor Tom Uebelherr as one of four recipients of the 2008 16th Annual Alliant Energy Underkofler Excellence in Teaching Award.
As one of this year’s recipients, Uebelherr will receive a $3,500 award, funded by an endowment from Alliant Energy, which recognizes and rewards extraordinary teachers at UW System institutions within Alliant Energy’s service area.
Uebelherr was selected for the award out of thousands of UW System faculty across the UW System including all four-year institutions, the UW Colleges and UW Extension.
Award recipients are judged by a committee of UW System faculty on their commitment to teaching, effective teaching strategies and ability to inspire notable achievements by former students. Uebelherr is honored for his impressive dedication as a teacher and his ability to effectively communicate his subject matter and inspire his students’ enthusiasm for learning.
Kitty Kingston, UW Colleges Art Department Chair, said Uebelherr’s exceptional record of experience in higher education as a professional artist and an instructor made him a perfect fit for the award.
“Tom has a long list of outstanding accomplishments in teaching, professional development and service,” Kingston said. “It is in the area of teaching, however, that Tom has dedicated himself in the expansion of the art curriculum, reflecting the changing needs of our discipline and our students … The UW Colleges Art Department recognizes Tom as being one of our most outstanding faculty members based on his strong and positive relationships with his students, his campus and his community members.”
Kingston added that Uebelherr’s student evaluations each semester supported the department’s impression of Uebelherr’s teaching ability. For example, one student wrote of Uebelherr’s class: “I find myself using the things he (Uebelherr) taught me both in and out of class. I look at art through a new set of eyes.”
This consistent student recognition led to Uebelherr receiving the rating of “exceptionally meritorious” consecutively for the past three years through the merit exercise conducted by the UW-Sheboygan campus and the UW Colleges Art Department.
Uebelherr came to UW-Sheboygan in 2001 and was promoted to tenure and an Associate Professor of Art in 2007. Uebelherr received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he studied and graduated with the late UW-Sheboygan Dean Raymond T. Hernandez.
Besides teaching a full load of art courses at UW-Sheboygan, Uebelherr also serves on several campus committees including the Professional Evaluation Committee, the Student Life and Interests Committee and the Art Department Executive Committee. He worked to establish the Digital Arts Lab and digital imaging program at UW-Sheboygan and created the outdoor sculpture exhibit Inside Out and the annual High School Art Scholarship Program and Exhibit.
Outside of UW-Sheboygan, Uebelherr serves as the President of the Coalition of Active Sculpture Teachers (CAST) and has exhibited at a number of juried exhibitions. His work is included in a number of permanent collections, including those at the Madison Civic Center Arts Center, the John Michael Kohler Arts Center and the Menomonee Nation Logging Museum.
Uebelherr said all of his professional activities are driven by his own personal desire to learn.
“I believe that an effective teacher is a dedicated and enthusiastic learner,” Uebelherr said. “I feel grateful to be on a campus with colleagues who have been so supportive and inspiring. I have had the great fortune of working with students at UW-Sheboygan who are eager to learn, engaged and creative, making my work here a rich and rewarding experience.”
Uebelherr’s honor marks the third Underkofler Award that has been bestowed on a UW-Sheboygan faculty member. In 1991, UW-Sheboygan Professor of Spanish Alice Homstad received one of the first Underkofler awards, followed by UW-Sheboygan Associate Professor of Geography Karl Byrand in 2005. Uebelherr was the only faculty honored this year from the UW Colleges.
“Professor Uebelherr brings to the classroom and studio a love for the subject matter and genuine interest in student learning,” said Al Hardersen, UW-Sheboygan Dean and Campus Executive Officer. “His commitment to quality is contagious. We are fortunate to have faculty like Tom who have chosen to teach at UW-Sheboygan. He is the third person in the 18-year history of the Underkofler Award to be recognized from our campus. We congratulate Professor Uebelherr for this outstanding achievement.”
Uebelherr will be honored, along with the three other award recipients who are from UW-Madison and UW-Platteville, at a special awards ceremony and reception with UW System President Kevin Reilly on September 26 at UW-Madison.
A special community and campus reception for Uebelherr has been planned for Thursday, May 15 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the UW-Sheboygan Fine Arts Gallery, located inside the Fine Arts Building. All faculty, staff, students and community residents are invited to gather to celebrate Uebelherr’s achievements and commitment to quality higher education in Sheboygan County.

UW-Sheboygan professor published in national geography textbook
University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan Associate Professor of Geography Karl Byrand has been published in a national textbook that will be utilized by geographers and university students alike all across the United States.
Byrand, who joined UW-Sheboygan in 2000 and received tenure in 2006, authored Chapter 9, “The Quest for Home: Sheboygan’s Hmong Population” in the book Immigrants Outside of Megalopolis: Ethnic Transformation in the Heartland, edited by Richard C. Jones and published by Lexington Books. The 13-chapter book includes research works from 13 different authors.
“The faculty at UW-Sheboygan must each meet three major responsibilities in their professional roles. These include teaching at an appropriate level for the UW System and the UW Colleges, to participate in research and publication and to contribute through university and community service,” said Al Hardersen, UW-Sheboygan Dean and Campus Executive Officer. “We are proud of all those UW-Sheboygan faculty who have made significant contributions to their field, like Professor Byrand.”
Byrand began his research on the Hmong population in Sheboygan in early 2003 and later presented a paper on his preliminary findings at a national geography conference. After his presentation, Richard Jones, the editor of Immigrants Outside of Megalopolis: Ethnic Transformation in the Heartland contacted Byrand and requested that he contribute a chapter on his ongoing Hmong research for the book he was putting together. With this request in mind, Byrand continued to perform extensive research over the next two and a half years.
Byrand utilized statistical census data covering a 30-year period and conducted interviews with many Sheboygan community members, including local physicians and prominent individuals in the Hmong community. According to Byrand, what he learned about the Hmong culture and the uniquely large Hmong population in the Sheboygan area intrigued him.
“I wanted to investigate this subject no only because of the size of the population (Sheboygan ranks 14th in the nation), but also because how the Hmong community has remained very cohesive and how they have made an imprint on the cultural landscape – from retail establishments to cultural festivals and radio programs,” Byrand said. “It is all the more fascinating when one contrasts this ethnic group with the ‘traditional’ ethnic groups that have dominated the cultural landscape for about 150 years prior to the Hmong’s’ arrival, such as the German and the Dutch.”
The book will be distributed nationally through booksellers such as Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Borders and Target. Byrand said that geographers who conduct research and instruct courses on race and ethnicity will most likely make use of the book for their research and courses. Byrand said he plans to use the book as part of his “Roots and Diversity” course at UW-Sheboygan, which explores the geography of race and ethnicity in the United States.
Due to the fact that the publication is an academic work, Byrand will receive no royalties from book sales or student purchases.
Byrand holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Pittsburgh, a Master’s Degree in Earth Science from Montana State University and a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Maryland.
He resides in Sheboygan with his wife, Sherri Byrand, and son, Kade.

UW-Sheboygan selected as newest member of Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium
The University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan has been selected as the newest official member of the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium. The membership now opens up a wide array of new scholarship, internship and grant opportunities for UW-Sheboygan students interested in a wide variety of career disciplines.
UW-Sheboygan joins 32 other WSGC affiliate members across the state. Of these, only nine are University of Wisconsin campuses. UW-Sheboygan is only the second two-year UW Colleges campus to be selected for membership, joining UW-Fox Valley in the group. Other members include private colleges and universities and aerospace-related businesses and industries.
Membership in the WSGC gives UW-Sheboygan students the opportunity to apply for competitive NASA grants, scholarships and internships at the NASA Center. The UW-Sheboygan Foundation has agreed to provide matching grants and scholarships to all students selected for these awards. Awards will become available beginning in fall 2008.
According to UW-Sheboygan Dean & CEO Al Hardersen, UW-Sheboygan’s membership in the Consortium complements the plans already underway to develop the Great Lakes Aerospace Science & Education Center at Spaceport Sheboygan.
“This is a win-win situation for everyone involved,” Hardersen said. “New opportunities for grants and scholarships that normally would only be available on a four-year university campus are now available to our students right here in Sheboygan. And it provides our faculty with meaningful research opportunities with scientists at other campuses. And lastly, it provides NASA with access to some of the best and brightest students Sheboygan has to offer. We at UW-Sheboygan are looking forward to all the positive returns this membership will offer the community and our campus.”
Last week, the UW-Sheboygan also welcomed a new student organization to the campus, the “Star Troopers” organization, which aims to promote the pleasures and science of astronomy among UW-S students and the local community.
Harald Schenk, UW-Sheboygan associate lecturer of astronomy, has been selected as UW-Sheboygan’s institutional representative for the WSGC and as advisor for the new Star Troopers organization.
