UW-Sheboygan to hold auditions for two one-act plays Feb. 16-17

University Theatre will hold open auditions for its 2010 spring production of two one-act plays on February 16 and February 17, at 8 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre on the UW-Sheboygan campus.

The two short plays – Kissing Scene and Krapp’s Last Tape -- together will provide an intimate look at the choices we make in our lives and the unexpected consequences that result.

Kissing Scene revolves around an acting class where a man and a woman meet an hour before in a theater to rehearse their scene. The scene in question calls for them to kiss five times but whenever they attempt to rehearse the first kiss the duo break character to argue over the actual intent of the other.

Krapp’s Last Tape combines comedy with tragedy to reveal past and present moments from one man’s life. As he prepares to record a new tape on his 69th birthday, Krapp begins to review his tape archives. This immersion in his own history leads Krapp to question with growing regret whether his present lives up to his past.

All students, faculty, staff and the general public are encouraged to audition for these two one-act productions. Performances of both will be held at 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 15; Friday, April 16; Saturday, April 17; Friday, April 23; and Saturday, April 24.

For more information on the show or auditions, contact Himes at (920) 459-4417 or e-mail franklin.himes@uwc.edu or visit www.sheboygan.uwc.edu.

All applications are due to the Student Services Office by February 26 to be considered for awards during the fall 2010 and spring 2011 semesters.

UW-Sheboygan Foundation establishes Jack Snyder Memorial Fund
Fund honors late Athletics Director

As a result of the generosity of donors from all over the state and the Sheboygan community, the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan Foundation, Inc., has established the Jack Snyder Memorial Fund to honor the late UW-Sheboygan Athletics Director, Coach and Professor John “Jack” Snyder.

Snyder, 68, died unexpectedly on December 26, 2009, of an apparent heart attack in his sleep. Snyder was best known as the man who molded the UW-Sheboygan men’s basketball team into a fierce competitor in the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference in the 1970s and 1980s. Snyder joined UW-Sheboygan as the campus’ first Director of Athletics in 1969 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 2001. During his tenure as a Professor of Physical Education on the campus and the Athletics Director, Snyder coached numerous varsity sports teams, including men’s basketball, cross country, golf and tennis in addition to his teaching and administrative duties.

Snyder’s family has selected three charities to collect memorial donations in the wake of Snyder’s death, including the UW-Sheboygan Foundation. Over the years, Snyder was an avid supporter of Foundation fundraisers, including the annual scholarship fundraiser, Chicken & All That Jazz. Each year, Snyder volunteered extensively at the event coordinating grilling operations, working side-by-side with his former student-athletes. He was an avid supporter of the campus and its students and consistently called his days at UW-Sheboygan a “labor of love.”

A committee of UW-Sheboygan Foundation board members, UW-Sheboygan retired faculty, current UW-S faculty and staff and alumni has been developed – in coordination with the Snyder family -- to review funding options for Jack Snyder Memorial Fund donations.

Several anonymous donors have offered the Snyder family a match of all donations made to the UW-Sheboygan Foundation fund up to $15,000.

“The generosity of these donors leaves us at a loss of for words,” said Carrie Hoppe, UW-Sheboygan Foundation executive director. “Jack was such a wonderful man who obviously has touched this community – and these donors – in a very powerful way. We are honored that the family has entrusted the UW-Sheboygan Foundation with a memorial fund in his name and that these matching funds are available. We hope to make Jack proud and keep his legacy and memory alive for future generations of students.”

Over the coming months, the Foundation will continue to accept donations in Snyder’s honor in an effort to reach – or exceed – the $15,000 match threshold. A decision on the project(s) to be supported with fund donations will be announced in coming months. All donations are tax deductible.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the UW-Sheboygan Foundation Jack Snyder Memorial Fund can send donations to the UW-Sheboygan Foundation, One University Drive, Sheboygan, WI 53081. All checks should be made payable to the UW-Sheboygan Foundation. Donors are also asked to note “Jack Snyder Memorial” in the check memo section.

For more information on the UW-Sheboygan Foundation, the Jack Snyder Memorial Fund or giving options, contact Hoppe at (920) 459-6612 or e-mail carrie.hoppe@uwc.edu.

College Goal Sunday offered at UW-Sheboygan Feb. 21
Students offered help in completing FAFSA form for financial aid

Each year, students from first-generation and low-income families think they cannot afford to attend college. With the growing cost of post-secondary tuition, some students and their families believe a degree is not in their future.

College Goal Sunday hopes to change students’ minds. This statewide initiative provides step-by-step assistance to hundreds of high school seniors and their families in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is the necessary gateway for students who wish to access federal grants for higher education.

Locally, this event will be held on Sunday, February 21 from 2 to 4 p.m. on the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan campus in Sheboygan. The event is sponsored by the Wisconsin Association for Student Financial Aid Administrators and is designed to address the needs of low-income and first-generation college students who are completing and submitting the FAFSA. The federal government requires a FAFSA from all students seeking financial aid, including loans and grants, to attend and pay for college.

UW-Sheboygan is located at One University Drive, Sheboygan, and easily accessible off Taylor Drive between Union and Indiana avenues. All participants should park in the West Parking Lot and enter through the ACUITY Technology Center front entrance and stop at the registration table.

A presentation by Patty Taylor, the financial aid director at Lakeland College, will be offered during the afternoon, along with access to the Internet in a UW-Sheboygan computer lab where students will be able to access and file the FAFSA form.

Dependent students, those born after January 1, 1986, should bring a parent along with completed federal income tax returns for 2009 (if filing) and W2 statements. If a parent is unavailable, students should still attend.

In 2006, 50 percent of Wisconsin high school graduates reported plans to attend a four-year college. However, many of these students struggle to fulfill their plans, or simply abandon them, for financial reasons. Completing the FAFSA is the first step these students must take to overcome their financial burdens and pursue their goal of higher education.

The 2009 College Goal Sunday event assisted 2,320 college-bound students/families and gave away one $250 scholarship at each of its locations.

For more information about this event and other College Goal Sunday locations, please visit www.WiCollegeGoalSunday.org, or call (866) 578-4625.

Spring classes start Jan. 25 at UW-Sheboygan
Applications for spring term continue to be accepted

Registration for the Spring 2010 term at the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan is now underway. Classes begin January 25, 2010. Students who have not yet applied are still encouraged to do so in the coming weeks as applications continue to be accepted for the Spring term.

One of the 13 freshman-sophomore campuses of the University of Wisconsin Colleges, UW-Sheboygan provides area residents the opportunity to put the University of Wisconsin on their resume. It offers small classes, high quality instruction, the lowest tuition in UW System, and a well-developed Academic Success Center to help with tutoring and other student needs.

Students can earn an Associate of Arts & Science Degree at UW-Sheboygan. Credits transfer easily to UW baccalaureate institutions and to many private schools. Students who transfer from the UW Colleges typically perform very well academically at the four-year institutions.

Tuition rates remain frozen at 2006 levels again for this academic year, making UW-Sheboygan the most affordable option in the UW System for Sheboygan area residents. All students are eligible to apply for financial aid, as well as apply for the more than $100,000 in scholarships awarded by the UW-Sheboygan Foundation to UW-Sheboygan students each year. Scholarship applications are available now and are due February 26.

In addition to getting a great start on credits for transfer to a four-year institution, students also can stay on campus to complete a bachelor’s degree in one of several disciplines through UW-Sheboygan’s unique collaborative degree programs with other four-year UW System institutions.

For information about admission, financial aid or bachelor’s degree options, contact the Student Services Office at (920) 459-6633 or e-mail uwshb@uwc.edu. Stop in today to schedule a campus tour and a one-on-one meeting with a student advisor. A complete schedule of spring classes is available on the UW-Sheboygan Web site, www.sheboygan.uwc.edu.

Holocaust survivor Henry Golde to speak at UW-Sheboygan

The University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan will again host Holocaust survivor and author Henry Golde on Wednesday, December 2 for a special discussion on his book Ragdolls, which profiles his survival of 10 concentration camps over the course of five years under the Nazi regime.

This special presentation, sponsored by the UW Oshkosh Multicultural Education class and the campus, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theater. Golde first shared his story of survival in April 2009 to a packed audience of more than 150 people on the campus.

For more than 15 years, Oshkosh resident Golde has shared his life experiences as a survivor of the Holocaust and the atrocities of Nazi Europe. His story is compelling and has the ability to make guests both laugh and cry.

Golde’s presentation is age-appropriate for children and is focused on his hope to spread goodwill and the belief that evil can be overcome. According to Golde, “We should love, not hate.”

“Henry Golde gives a universal message of love vs. hate that reaches across all ages,” said Courtney Bauder, UW Oshkosh Educational Foundations Department instructor.

Admission to this presentation is free and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

UW-Sheboygan is located on University Drive, which is off Taylor Drive between Indiana and Union avenues. Guests are encouraged to park in the East parking lot and enter the rear entrance of the Fine Arts Building and walk through the building to the front lobby and the entrance to the Fine Arts Theater.

UW-Sheboygan closed Nov. 26 & 27
Campus closures for Thanksgiving holiday and furlough day

The University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan campus campus will be closed Thursday, November 26, 2009, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.
The campus also will be closed Friday, November, 27, for a state-mandated employee furlough day. All campus buildings and offices will be closed and no functions will be scheduled.
The state-mandated furlough day is one of 16 unpaid furlough days required of all state employees in the 2009-2011 state budget biennium. The day after Thanksgiving was chosen as a mandatory furlough day because it would have minimal impact on students, staff, and the community.
Additional campus-wide furlough days scheduled for the 2009-2010 academic year are January 4, March 22 and May 24. Those four furlough days, scheduled across the UW Colleges, fall during semester break, spring break and following the end of spring classes.

For more information about UW-Sheboygan or to schedule an appointment with an adviser, call the Student Services Office at (920) 459-6633 or e-mail uwshb@uwc.edu.

ACT Prep Course offered to area students

Area high school juniors and seniors are invited to the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan for a series of ACT prep courses over the coming months.

The course, which is offered as a one-day program runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., is offered by the UW-Sheboygan Continuing Education Office. The next session will be held November 28 on the UW-Sheboygan campus in the Brotz Science Building (Room 6001 – lower level). A short break and a lunch break will be offered during the day.

Other available prep course dates in 2010 are January 23, March 27, and May 29. All classes will be held in the UW-Sheboygan Brotz Science Building, Room 6001.

These special preparatory courses will allow students to hone the skills they have learned in high school to do well on the ACT exam. Highly skilled instructors will offer insight into:
• Test-taking strategies;
• Math problem solving strategies (algebra, geometry and trigonometry);
• Proper English usage (rhetorical skills and mechanics); and
• Analysis and interpretation of scientific research summaries and conflicting hypotheses.

The science portion is taught by Susan Busche, a science teacher at Sheboygan South High School. Dale Robson of Random Lake High School will be helping students with their English skills. Allison Komaromy of Sheboygan North High School will work with students on their math problem-solving abilities.

The biggest help a preparatory course can offer students is an in-depth look at the layout and content of the exam. By knowing what topics may or may not be covered, students can study more efficiently, and, therefore, go into the test with more confidence.

Course fee for any workshop date is $69. Please register two weeks prior to the chosen test date. The UW-Sheboygan campus is located on University Drive, just off Taylor Drive between Indiana and Union avenues in Sheboygan.

To register for an ACT prep course, call the UW-Sheboygan Continuing Education Office at (920) 459-6617 or register e-mail jane.donlon@uwc.edu.

SEAC President and UW-Sheboygan student Linda Lee will share information learned from the conference and announce events that SEAC has planned for the coming academic year on the UW-Sheboygan campus.

Second, UW-Sheboygan Upward Bound participant and Sheboygan South High School sophomore Pa Thao will discuss Upward Bound’s fall service program which involves collecting textbooks for the “Invisible Children” book drive. Textbooks will be collected on the UW-Sheboygan campus (Commons), South High School, North High School and Lakeland College until January 2010, and will be provided to Ugandan children and former child soldiers who have been freed from their captors and are rebuilding their lives through education. The books will be used to offer them the opportunity to learn and discover a new way of life.

Upward Bound is a federally-funded TRIO program offered at both the UW-Sheboygan and UW-Manitowoc campuses. Locally, students who are first-generation college students from both North and South High School participate in the program throughout their high school years in order to become better prepared for college.

To drive home the impact and purpose of the “Invisible Children” service project, the Rev. Elijah Musoke, founder of Living Hope International Ministries in Uganda, will address the Upward Bound students and community guests.

Rev. Musoke, who, along with his wife, runs a mission outreach program and orphanage in his native Uganda, will share his experiences growing up in Uganda and the many challenges he had to overcome in his lifetime. Specifically, he will discuss the high unemployment and poverty rates in the country, as well as the challenges to feed and educate Uganda’s youth.

All UW-Sheboygan students, faculty, staff and Sheboygan-area residents are encouraged to attend this presentation. Admission is free.
