Fall Department Meeting
I extend my personal welcome to all new members of the department, and especially to those assigned to teach developmental mathematics. I hope to have the chance to meet all of you soon. Please feel free to call on me (galexand@uwc.edu or 608-758-6539*) for course and teaching advice anytime during the year. You should check out materials available on our developmental math website at http://www.uwc.edu/dept/math/dev-math/devmath/. You can also find my reports and recommendations from previous years there if you wish to review or catch up on that information.
For 2004-05, my instructional duties consist of the online MAT 091 both semesters and three campus courses at UW Rock County. I am working with Mark Fuller to expand our use of the ALEKS software on campus through hybrid course development so that we will now have a full sequence (091, 105, and110) available to students this year.
Assessment Plan for Mat 09x
As we started in the spring 2004 semester, I will again prepare both paper and online assessment exams for MAT 091 (Elementary Algebra) and its equivalents (MAT 095 and MAT 097). Instructors are encouraged to include credit for this exam in their syllabi and course grading procedures. The MAT 09x Assessment Exam includes three questions for each of the seven outcome objectives. The three questions are weighted for low, medium, and high levels of mastery, for a total of 6 points per objective. Instructors may assign the assessment exam in class near the end of the semester, give it as part of the final exam, or assign it to students to work independently online. The online version will be available through the Desire2Learn (D2L) site for the Online MAT 09x Learning Lab.
Results from the Spring 2004 assessment project will be distributed in a separate report.
Online MAT 09x Learning Lab
I have a substantial set of materials available in the Online MAT 09x Learning Lab now through a D2L course site. As the semester starts, I will make sure that all instructors and students in MAT 091, MAT 095, or MAT 097 have access to the Learning Lab site. This site will show up in your regular course list once you login to D2L (https://uwc.courses.wisconsin.edu).
As Developmental Math Coordinator, I am expecting to
continue campus visits on the rate of 3 campuses per semester so that I get to
each campus over a two-year cycle. I plan to schedule visits in
September/October to
* I have a new phone number due to an office swap over the summer. Please make note of this new number for your records.
