Mat 09x Assessment Results - Fall 2004

 

 

The Mat 09x assessment test was revised after discussions and input at the Developmental Math Workshop held in January 2004. The online version was delivered through our new Online MAT 09x Learning Lab via a Desire2Learn course site that was open to instructors and students in MAT 091, 095, and 097.

 

A total of 467 students participated in the assessment process in the fall 2004 semester. This includes 120 students who took the assessment test online and 347 students who were assessed via final exam questions in class. We had 49 sections of MAT 09x in the fall 2004 semester, with 1162 students as of the 10th day enrollments. These assessment figures represent 40% of the total Mat 09x enrollment, which is down somewhat from the spring 2004 participation rates.

 

Proficiency goals were assessed on the basis of final exam questions drawn from the assessment question pool for Mat 09x.

 

Breadth of Knowledge Proficiency Goals

The successful student will:

1.      be able to perform arithmetic calculations on real numbers and understand the order of operations. 92% met or exceeded expectations.

2.      use variable notation and be able to simplify and evaluate algebraic expressions. 90% met or exceeded expectations.

3.      be able to solve linear equations in one variable. 93% met or exceeded expectations.

4.      know the rules of exponents as applied to variable terms. 80% met or exceeded expectations.

5.      be able to add, subtract, and multiply polynomials. 84% met or exceeded expectations.

6.      know how to factor polynomials using greatest common factoring, the grouping method, trinomial factoring, and difference of perfect squares. 91% met or exceeded expectations.

7.      be able to graph linear equations with two variables in the rectangular coordinate system. 82% met or exceeded expectations.
