Alternative Careers in Teaching (act!) Program

Alternative Careers in Teaching, or act!, is an exciting teacher licensure program specifically designed for working professionals with a bachelor's degree and at least five years of work experience who desire to change careers and become a seconday level (middle or high school) teacher in mathematics or science.
act! is a coooperative program between the UW Colleges and UW Oshkosh. Successful candidates are licensed by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction through the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh College of Education and Human Services.
This exciting program addresses the shortage of qualified and certified mathematics and science teachers in Wisconsin and throughout the country, and it provides a unique career change opportunity for working adults in our community.
The act! program is individually tailored to each student participant. Progress to certification is determined partially by the candidate's desired completion time and by the amount of work the candidate must accomplish to qualify for licensure. Expected completion time will vary from 18 months to as long as three years.
The three-phase program will include steps to make sure applicants want to move into a teaching career, assess applicant work experience in order to determine what further courses they will need, courses at UW-Oshkosh and UW Colleges using distance education and on-site classes and extensive practice teaching.
To apply, students should meet with an act! program adviser and directly apply to the program. Click here to print or download an application form and a program brochure.
